I am the past Divisional Director for Musculoskeletal, Digestive Diseases, Major Trauma and Perioperative Care Medicine at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where I was also the Clinical Lead for the International Business Unit and a Consultant in Anesthesia and Critical Care. I am also an Associate lecturer at the University of Cambridge.
My teaching and research focus on protecting the brain where I am recognised as an international expert. My international training and educational collaborations include Judge Business School, Critical Care Networks, and establishing new Medical School in Dubai. I have developed a highly secure platform for monitoring well-being and training, supported by NHSI and psychology experts from Birkbeck College is now being adopted by Health Education England to assess NHS professional training culture.
I have clinical and managerial experience at the local, national and international levels. I have been the Adviser to Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, Chairman of Dubai Healthcare City. Working with the Authority he has helped to establish the Mohammed bin Rashid University of Health Sciences and is advising on the development of the Mohammed bin Rashid University Hospital.
I have held leadership roles in a number of U.K. and international medical societies, including as President of the Neuroanaesthesia Society of Great Britain & Ireland and President of the Society of International Neuroanaesthesia & Critical Care. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology and Critical Care and the European Journal of Anaethesiology and is the author of more than 80 peer reviewed publications. Basil has also regularly participated as a speaker and lecturer, including at the Royal College of Anaesthatists, the European Society of Anaesthesiology, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and at Arab Health.
I received his medical degree from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland in 1986 and my Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Warwick in 2005.
