Congratulations to the newly-elected Honorary Secretary of the BSOA

Following the recent AGM which took place during the Spring Scientific Meeting in London, we are delighted to congratulate Dr Anwar Hussein on his successful election as the upcoming Honorary Secretary of the BSOA.

Please find below his candidate statement which was presented at the meeting:

Anwar Hussein

Qualifications:      BSc BMBCh DPhil (Oxon) FRCA FFICM

Current Post:        Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine

Clinical Director of Perioperative Medicine at SWLEOC

Hospital:               South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre

Candidate’s Statement:

I trained as a research scientist before becoming a doctor. I obtained my PhD in 1983 researching acute lung injury at Oxford University. Having spent a couple of years on postdoctoral fellowships at McMaster university in Canada and Vanderbilt University in the USA, studying endothelial injury in animal and cell models of ALI/ARDS, I then decided to return to the UK and clinical medicine, and graduated from Oxford University Medical School in 1990.

My postgraduate anaesthesia and critical care training took place in Oxford as well as the North West London group of hospitals. I was appointed consultant at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust in 1999, and also served as RCA Tutor for 4 years. Having been invited to organise anaesthesia and perioperative care services at SWLEOC in 2004, I was instrumental in developing a unique model of Perioperative Medicine that is provided solely by intensive care specialists.

With my strong background in orthopaedic anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, research, education and administration, I am delighted to be nominated to take up the mantle of Honorary Secretary of the BSOA. I have held detailed discussions with members of the BSOA Committee and am keen to develop numerous ideas and projects to continue its growth and expansion. I am particularly interested to expand the Society and provide platforms for sharing new developments and best practices, develop multi-centre studies of innovative practices and quality improvement, as well as increase collaboration with the RCA and other societies.

Please do join us in welcoming Anwar to the BSOA Committee.

Kindest regards

Dr Bernadette Ratnayake.
President, BSOA
